He would never do grafitti or vandalize that house
And he would never buy a weapon and bring it to our home
But no one has seen or heard from him since last Wednesday
Oh oh oh oh...
A friend of mine has just introduced me to this captivating, sounds alluring, goosebumping, out-of-this-world band called Highasakite. And when you try to find them on Spotify, you will see that my favorite track, 'Since Last Wednesday', sits number 1 on their popular tracks list. It doesn't matter anyway, I put the video above so you guys can (hopefully) see it.
By the way, I also put a portion of their lyrics on top, just so you have at least an idea of what's gonna happen in this post.
So yeah, basically I fell in love with this particular work of art. The rhythm, the beat, the vocal, THE VOCAL, the accents and especially the lyrics. Based on my interpretation, correct me if I'm wrong, the lyrics is about a Flying Panda, going on a journey across the world to find this Dancing Penguin and destroy the crystal of Escala, in order to maintain balance in the planet of Pandora, because the prophecy from the elder gods said so.
Okay, I'm joking (and pretty badly too, if I would add). So the song basically tells a story about this normal young boy, probably 14 to 16, only minding himself, doing every mundane things he always did, never done anything stupid, never did anything bad for once in his life, he's just plain normal young boy you see everyday. But, suddenly, he's gone. Missing. Disappear into nothing. No one has ever seen or heard from him. Since last Wednesday.
Now, of course you want to know what happen to the boy, right? But the song doesn't tell us much what happens before or after the event. So yeah.
My brain then automatically scans for answers, finding possibilities, anything relevant to the story. Then, without realizing, I already caught myself trying to interpret the semiotic text. My first intuition floats my imagination and puts me in the position of the boy behind the lyrics. What would happen if I went missing? I could be dead, or kidnapped, or tortured, or being sodomized by those ungrateful religious priest, or being sold into slavery in the west coast of Namibia.
But, the lyrics itself questions your significance. What will happen after you're gone? Your parents must be looking for you. Your friends might be missing you too. Wait, your friends? How much friends do you have? Well, you might have your social circle, but what else? What's your impact to those people? Moreover, what's your impact to the world? How significant are you? By the time you're gone, people won't be talking about you anymore. You're gone, literally. Your name doesn't get written anywhere in the history. You're just another guy living and dying on this earth. A small planet, floating around in the universe. In this level, your impact is so insignificant that it won't really matter whether you're missing or not.
However, my second intuition brings me to question how secure our lives are? If a normal boy could just easily missing, what are the odds of you, who maybe a bit more 'unique', went missing too? Maybe it's CIA, maybe FBI. Maybe some maniac lurking in your neighborhood. Or maybe the aliens. The ghost of your town. The flying panda and the dancing penguin. You'll never know. There are things that should left unknown.
These things are what makes life unique. You don't know what will happen to you tomorrow, next week, next month, next year, even the next 5 seconds. All we can do is to continue doing what we are doing. Live. Day by day. And just be grateful about it. Make the most of it. Its what makes us human.
And of course, as my favorite band and my favorite radio station would say, keep the faith!
